Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material, and hail leaves a few telltale marks:
When hail hits a shingle, it knocks off the protective granules and exposes the black asphalt layer underneath. These show up as round, dark spots scattered across the roof. They're often random in pattern — that randomness is one of the things inspectors and insurance adjusters look for.
A hail bruise isn't always visible, but you can often feel it. Pressing on the spot feels soft or spongy, similar to pressing on a bruise on a piece of fruit. That softness means the shingle's structure has been compromised.
After a hailstorm, those knocked-off granules wash down into your gutters and downspouts. Finding a buildup of coarse, sand-like granules is a strong sign your shingles took hail damage.
Larger hail can crack shingles outright or even leave a small puncture. This is the most obvious form of damage and almost always requires repair.
Hail doesn't only hit the shingles. Some of the clearest evidence is on the metal components:
Soft metal dents easily, so the flashing around chimneys and skylights, your roof vents, and the gutters themselves often show visible dimples. If your gutters and downspouts are dented, your shingles almost certainly took a hit too.
